Bronchitis

Bronchitis is a respiratory disease which causes inflammation of the bronchial passages inside the lungs. When these passages become inflated, the airways become restricted and shut off which can cause coughing and breathlessness.

Bronchitis can be classified as acute or chronic. Acute bronchitis can last about a week. Chronic bronchitis can last months and return frequently.

Acute bronchitis is often caused by a virus but can occasionally be bacterial. Chronic bronchitis is often severe and long term and requires medical attention. Smokers may not recover as quickly from a bronchial infection and may be at higher risk of developing chronic bronchitis.

One of the main cause of chronic bronchitis is cigarette smoking and exposure to industrial pollutants.’

Bronchitis symptoms include a cough with phlegm and soreness in the chest area. Chronic bronchitis may also be accompanied by wheezing and tiredness.

Treatment is usually consists of rest, plenty of fluids, and avoiding smoke. A prescription bronchodilator may be prescribed as well as a strong cough syrup. Antibiotics may also be prescribed if needed. Chronic Bronchitis sufferers are often at risk for complications so the flu and pneumonia vaccibes are also highly recommended
